Subject Overview

Screen Production provides practical experience of film and media making, embedded within a liberal arts programme that explores the history, aesthetics and technologies of film and media.
You will be encouraged to develop traditional and innovative skills for creating cinematic narratives, as well as gaining technical expertise from staff with strong links to the industry.

Knowledge and Skills

Bachelor of Arts (Honours)in Screen Production
During this one-year programmes you can expect an intensive individual and group learning experience. We start with basic production management, shot composition and editing, and then take you through interviewing documentary subjects to advanced blocking and camera movement. You will direct actors in front of the class, pitch documentary ideas and cut trailers. You will also learn how to use editing software such as EP Scheduling and Final Draft.
You will finish the year with a creative project. Depending on your area of focus, you will complete your own 10-minute short film or documentary, and/or write a feature screenplay.

Potential Careers

Films produced by our students have screened at major international film festivals, including Venice, London and New York, and been included in the New Zealand International Film Festival.
We are proud of our close relationship with industry, as evidenced by our Industry Board of Advisors and the number of graduates who have successfully secured work in the industry.

Other information

Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Screen Production
A BA or Bachelor of Global Studies with a major in Film, Media and Television, or Media, Film or Television or a related subject, or approval of the Head of School or nominee. You must have a Grade Point Average of 5.0 or higher in 45 points at Stage III in your major. You must also meet Screen Production's selection criteria.
