Subject Overview

You can choose from different aspects of Māori Studies to suit your interests and career goals. Study opportunities include Māori language, Māori and the media, material culture, history, development, politics, and Māori performing arts (kapa haka).

Knowledge and Skills

As a postgraduate student you can study Māori language and literature, material culture, society and culture, politics, media and Māori development.
Māori Studies staff have an exceptional record of research and publication. You will benefit from that legacy in our research-based teaching programmes and can contribute to it by your own work.

Potential Careers

Māori Studies can prepare you for a career in teaching, translation, research, media, iwi development, central and local government. You could work as an iwi adviser or administrator, consultant or policy analyst.

Master of Arts in Māori Studies
120-point (one-year) MA
A BA(Hons) or PGDipArts in Māori Studies with a Grade Point Average of 5.0 or higher.
The following subjects may also be considered for entry: Anthropology, Art History, Dance, Education, English, Gender Studies, Geography, History, Language Teaching, Linguistics, Music, Pacific Studies, Sociology, Translation Studies.

180-point (18-month) MA
A BA with a major in Māori Studies or approval of the Head of School or nominee. You must have a Grade Point Average of 5.0 or higher in 75 points above Stage II including at least 45 points in the major.
The following subjects may also be considered for entry: Anthropology, Art History, Dance, Education, English, Gender Studies, Geography, History, Language Teaching, Linguistics, Music, Pacific Studies, Sociology, Translation Studies.
