Course Prescription

Provides students with the possibility of undertaking directed study of a topic in Theological and Religious Studies approved by the Academic Head and directed by a member of academic staff with relevant expertise.

Course Overview

The course guides you through the process of conducting a short research project a topic of your choice. It is an opportunity to acquire and practice the skills you will need for longer research projects at postgraduate level. First you will learn how to formulate a research question and thesis. Then you will develop your ideas into a written research proposal. Next, you will draw up a short literature review in the form of an annotated bibliography. In the last month of the course your supervisor will give you feedback on the first draft of your essay, and you will then have the opportunity to refine that draft before submitting the final version. Your progress through the project is also assessed with a research diary on Canvas.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

There are no lectures for this course. You will be expected to develop a schedule of regular meetings with your supervisor at the beginning of the course. Your success in this course will depend on your ability to manage your time over the course of the whole semester and to take initiative in contacting your supervisor to discuss your progress and any challenges you face in the course of your research and writing.

Campus Experience

Students are expected to schedule regular meetings with their supervisor and to attend these meetings either in person or online as agreed with their supervisor.

There are no scheduled seminars or lectures.

This course is not available for delivery to students studying remotely outside NZ.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Learning Continuity

In the event of an unexpected disruption, we undertake to maintain the continuity and standard of teaching and learning in all your courses throughout the year. If there are unexpected disruptions the University has contingency plans to ensure that access to your course continues and course assessment continues to meet the principles of the University’s assessment policy. Some adjustments may need to be made in emergencies. You will be kept fully informed by your course co-ordinator/director, and if disruption occurs you should refer to the university website for information about how to proceed.

Student Feedback, Support and Charter

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions. Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.
