PSYCH 726 focuses on two closely related topics: emotion and motivation, as well as how they influence the construction of the self. Pride. Shame. Anger. Gratitude. Emotions are fundamental to our psychological experience, and are intrinsically connected to social, psychological, and physical wellbeing. This course will explore how emotions are made, the different flavors of discrete emotions, how emotions influence behavior, and cross-cultural differences in emotions. The course will also explore the science of motivation, or what enables people to optimally engage in activities like school, work, sports, and social relationships. Why are some people driven to succeed, while others lack motivation? At the end of this course, students will have developed the knowledge to apply current theory and research to understand emotion and motivation in interpersonal contexts. This course is suitable for students enrolled in a PGDip or Hons degree in psychology. The course is not part of any specialisation and is relevant to include in any PGDip or Hons programme.
