The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Taught courses use a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas to provide students with learning materials including reading lists and lecture recordings (where available). Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

The content and delivery of content in this course are protected by copyright. Material belonging to others may have been used in this course and copied by and solely for the educational purposes of the University under license.

In the event of an unexpected disruption, we undertake to maintain the continuity and standard of teaching and learning in all your courses throughout the year. The University of Auckland will not tolerate cheating, or assisting others to cheat, and views cheating in coursework as a serious academic offence. The work that a student submits for grading must be the student's own work, reflecting their learning. Where work from other sources is used, it must be properly acknowledged and referenced. A student's assessed work may be reviewed for potential plagiarism or other forms of academic misconduct, using computerised detection mechanisms.

Students may be asked to submit assessments digitally. The University reserves the right to conduct scheduled tests and examinations online or through the use of computers or other electronic devices. Where tests or examinations are conducted online remote invigilation arrangements may be used. In exceptional circumstances changes to elements of this course may be necessary at short notice. Students enrolled in this course will be informed of any such changes and the reasons for them, as soon as possible, through Canvas.

The following late submission penalties will be applied for assessments:

• <=24 hours (1 day) 10%
• >24 hours but <=48 hours (2 days) 20%
• >48 hours but <=72 hours (3 days) 30%
• >72 hours but <=96 hours (4 days) 40%
• >96 hours but <=168 hours (7 days) 50%
• >168 hours (7 days) 100%

A passing mark is 50% or higher, according to University policy.

Feedback on taught courses is gathered from students at the end of each semester through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions. Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students. In addition, class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Feedback from 2024 SET was as follows (Response Rate: 80%).

• Students appreciated the clarity and conciseness of the lectures.
• Weekly updates and structured materials on Canvas were noted as helpful.
• Practical labs, such as geospatial imaging for risk assessments, were highly valued.
• Guest lectures provided insights into real-life challenges and professional experiences, broadening perspectives.
• Students reported gaining new skills like conducting in-depth risk and vulnerability assessments.
• The human factor in disaster risk and response was emphasized, which students found eye-opening and applicable to their careers.
• The use of Panopto and Canvas platforms made learning accessible.
• Assignments were effective in applying theoretical knowledge.
• A single one-hour tutorial felt rushed; a two-hour session was suggested.
• Learning QGIS for mapping was challenging due to limited tutorial sessions.
• Some students felt overwhelmed by the breadth of material covered in a short timeframe.
• A few students expected more technical content in disaster risk mapping but appreciated the course's broader focus on the human factor.

Course expectations (e.g. content, tutorials, extra labs) will be made clearer in 2025 to address some of the concerns above. Tutorial sessions will still be limited to 1 hour, but we will ensure better time management and clarify expectations for continued self-learning post-class. QGIS was included as a course extra with two 2-hour labs and students were given the opportunity to continue engaging with the QGIS trainer post-labs.
