Course Prescription

Develops students’ competence in translating between Chinese and English in a variety of subject areas, such as trade, tourism, law, literature or finance, and in different text types. You will learn skills that will help you critically analyse and accurately translate more complex documents, preserving the essence and integrity of the text that require subject knowledge and in-depth research.

Course Overview

Designed for advanced Chinese language learners, Chinese heritage speakers and Chinese native speakers, this course offers a unique opportunity to delve into advanced-level Chinese language studies focused on social equity and community services in English and Chinese-speaking countries. Through a comparative analysis of linguistic and cultural nuances between Chinese and English languages, students will gain a deeper and critical understanding of translingual practices and translation services in diverse genres (such as literature, film, and TV production) and contexts (such as diplomacy, crisis, and medical emergencies). The course incorporates a wealth of bilingual examples in lectures and tutorials, promoting bilingualism and even multilingualism among students who bring their home languages into the course. By introducing professional translation standards and cutting-edge translation technologies, the course aims to foster an advanced level of Chinese-English translation competence, preparing students for potential engagement in the translation profession in the future.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of lectures and 8 hours of reading and thinking about the content and work on assignments.

Attendance is required at scheduled activities to complete the course.

Lectures will be available as recordings. Due to their interactive nature, tutorial classes will not be available as recordings.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

In the event of an unexpected disruption, we undertake to maintain the continuity and standard of teaching and learning in all your courses throughout the year. Student Feedback, Support and Charter

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions. Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.
