This course will focus on how and why to use different types of material, including both archaeology and literary evidence, in the study of the ancient world.
The course will particularly explore issues of identity. Focusing on the development of, and interplay between, various ancient cultures in the ancient Mediterranean world, the class will discuss issues such as the nature of territorial expansion, the workings of ‘empire’, physical and literary expressions of identity, the family, the role of religion, etc.
