Programme Overview

The BCom/BDes conjoint gives you an advantage in business and enterprise as you develop skills to be proactive in ever-changing markets with ever-changing technologies.

You can pursue your own interests in a flexible business degree offering a variety of majors. At the same time, you will learn how to research, prototype, test and implement different solutions to business problems, using real-world and imagined scenarios.

Emerging and future technologies will require business nous and design savvy to apply in business. The BCom/BDes gives you the commercial and creative grounding to pursue exciting entrepreneurial careers.

Programme Structure

The BCom/BDes usually takes four years to complete.

Your specific enrolment will depend on your chosen majors in the BCom. You will need to complete 540 points:

  • 255 points from BCom courses
  • 255 points from BDes courses:
  • 165 points from BDes core courses
  • 90 points from BDes elective courses
  • 15 points Waipapa Taumata Rau core course
  • 15 points from courses available for any programme


In the BCom, you can choose from 12 majors covering all aspects of business and enterprise operations and strategy.  More information on BCom majors.

In your BDes component, alongside design foundation courses and studio practice, you will build your own study plan of six elective courses from our  four design themes:

  • Design and Local Community Practices
  • Design and Global Challenges
  • Design and Business
  • Design and Emerging Technologies

In your final year, you will undertake a capstone design research project, working from the initial discovery phase right through to testing and implementation.

You will probably enrol in nine 15-point courses (135 points) each year if you want to complete in four years. You need to maintain a Grade Point Average of 3.5 each year to continue with your conjoint.

Coupled with specialist commercial knowledge developed in the BCom major of your choice, you will graduate with a multifaceted skill set applicable in, and desired by, many industries.

A student may substitute one or more other courses for one or more of the Bachelor of Commerce Schedule courses with the permission of Senate or its representative.

  • 255 points for Bachelor of Commerce Conjoint Component, and
  • 255 points for Bachelor of Design Conjoint Component, and

Bachelor of Commerce Conjoint Component

Complete 255 points comprising:

  • 105 points for Core Courses, and
  • 15 points from Capstone Courses, and
  • At least 1 item from Majors, and
  • 0 to 60 points from Other Courses from the Bachelor of Commerce Schedule

Selected courses must include at least 135 points at level 200 or higher.

Selected courses must include at least 75 points at level 300 or higher.

Complete 105 points comprising:

  • 75 points for all Compulsory Courses, and
  • 15 points from Business Elective Courses, and
  • 15 points from Statistics Elective Courses
