Programme Overview

Complement your musical studies with a wide range of subjects in the humanities, social sciences, cultures and languages.

You’ll learn from leading researchers while developing your practice with some of the country’s finest instrument teachers, music historians and composers.

Our BA/BMus conjoint develops essential skills that can help you to adapt and thrive in a fast-changing, globalised economy and an evolving music industry.

Programme Structure

The BA/BMus usually takes four years to complete.

You will need to complete 540 points, consisting of:

  • 255 points from BA courses
  • 255 points from BMus courses
  • 15 points from General Education
  • 15 points from courses available for any programme

You can choose up to two subjects as your major(s) for the BA component of your conjoint, and would normally take four or five BA courses each year. You can also choose to take up to two modules. To find out more about structuring the BA side of your study, see planning your BA conjoint.

You would usually enrol in nine 15-point courses (135 points) each year if you want to complete in four years. You need to maintain a Grade Point Average of 3.5 each year to continue with your conjoint.

If you are a new student studying an undergraduate degree with us in 2025 you will most likely need to complete one General Education course and one Waipapa Taumata Rau course.

Selected courses from the Bachelor of Arts Conjoint Component must include courses in a minimum of three subjects listed in the Bachelor of Arts Schedule.

Programme Schedules

Complete 540 points comprising:

  • 255 points for Bachelor of Arts Conjoint Component, and
  • 255 points for one Specialisation from Bachelor of Music Conjoint Component, and
  • 15 points for all Waipapa Taumata Rau Courses, and
  • 15 points from General Education Courses, and
  • 1 item from Academic Integrity Course

Bachelor of Arts Conjoint Component

Complete 255 points comprising:

  • 120 to 255 points for 1 to 2 Major from Majors, and
  • 0 to 135 points for 0 to 3 Modules from Modules, and
  • 0 to 135 points from Other Courses from the Bachelor of Arts Schedule

Selected courses must include at least 165 points at level 200 or higher.

Selected courses must include at least 75 points at level 300 or higher.

A student must complete at most 30 points of courses matching the pattern MUS ***.

Complete 0 to 135 points from the following:

No credit will be given for courses matching the pattern *******G, ********G, *********G, **********G, ***********G, or ************G.
